Grand Strand Youth Hockey is in need of enthusiastic volunteers, coaches and referees for the upcoming season, to ensure that our participants ages 4-17 continue to have a fantastic hockey experience.
Coaches must be at least 18 years of age, be able to pass a background check and have a genuine passion for the game of hockey and a desire to share it with young players.
Coaches should be willing to commit 2-3 hours per week. This includes practices on either Tuesday or Thursday evening (practice times between 5:30-8:30 p.m.) and for games which occur Saturdays between 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Coaches will also be asked to attend one mandatory coaches meeting before the session begins.
Our fall season runs for 12 weeks (8 games + playoffs) and kicks off in September.
All volunteer coaches will receive one free entry into the league ($150 value) for their child or family member, so volunteering is a great way to get your child involved in our league at no cost to you!
Referees must be at least 18 years of age, have a basic knowledge of the game of hockey. Past referee experience is a bonus, but is not required. All referees will be required to take a brief online test to become AAU certified.
Time commitment for referees will be 2-4 hours per week for up to 10 weeks, starting in September and running through Thanksgiving.
Games are held on Saturdays between 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Additional games may be held on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday evenings, which are used as make-up slots for weeks when weather prevents play on Saturday.
Games are run in one-hour slots at 22-minute halves with a 5-minute warm up period and 5-minute halftime.
Referees will be paid $25 per game and may be asked to call up to 4 games per week.
