Another great season of Grand Strand Youth Hockey is just around the corner!

This fall, we will offer youth leagues for players ages 6-17 years old, as well as a Learn to Play program for ages 4-9 years old.

Players who are new to our program — or new to the sport of hockey — will have several opportunities leading up the season to come try hockey and learn what our program is all about.

We will hold four pre-season events that are free to attend and open to anyone considering hockey this fall, culminating in our annual Season Kick-Off Event, which will take place 10 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025.

All events will take place at Market Common Hockey Rink, located at the corner of Crabtree Lane and Emmens Avenue at Grand Park (directions here).

Our pre-season schedule is as follows:

Summer Open Skate - Thursday, July 31 - 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Summer Open Skate - Thursday, Aug. 7 - 6:30-8:30 p.m. (Postponed due to Rain)

Summer Open Skate - Thursday, Aug. 14 - 6:30-8:30 p.m. (Postponed due to Rain)

Pre-Season Open Skate - Saturday, Aug. 23 - 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Pre-Season Open Skate - Thursday, Aug. 28 - 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Our Summer Open Skates consist of 30 minutes of shootaround and warm-ups, followed by 90 minutes of pick-up hockey for players of all ages. This is a great chance for new skaters or players to try skating on the rink, meet some of our coaches and organizers and interact with our players. These are "drop in" sessions and no registration or prior notice is needed to stop by. For players new to the game, we are able to provide skates, sticks and gear to borrow in for the session.

Season Kick-Off - Saturday, Sept. 6 - 10 a.m. to Noon

The schedule for this day is as follows:

10 a.m. - Open Skate & Shootaround: This session is open to anyone interested in playing hockey with us, regardless of age, skill or registration status. Come out and skate, meet our coaches and try hockey. No experience needed. Skates and gear available to be loaned.
10:30 a.m. - Parents Meeting: Designed for anyone who is new to our program or interested in signing up a skater for spring leagues or Learn to Play. Come meet our coaches and learn more about the program including scheduling, equipment and more.
11 a.m. - Open Practice: This session is for new and returning GSYH players. Coaches will split players up into groups based on age and skill level and run through several basic drills, similar to a normal practice. We will spend the last 30-45 minutes scrimmaging in game-like situations to help coaches evaluate players for roster placement.
10 a.m. to Noon - Hockey Gear Swap: GSYH organizers and volunteers will be on hand to collect donations of gently used hockey gear from the community and will have used gear on hand to trade and/or loan to new and returning players who may be in need or have outgrown their gear.
